Submissions

Submitting articles (click here for information about reviews)

Thank you for your interest in submitting an article for our consideration. While such timelines are of course quite variable, it usually takes between three and six months from submission to editorial decision, for new and revised submissions alike. Once accepted, articles are typically published within six months of reception of the author's final copy, with the obvious caveat that few accepted articles are ready to be considered final copy right away. Even the strongest submissions require some revisions after being accepted, including but not limited to all of the preparations necessary to make it conform to the journal's style sheet.

For questions about submitting an article, or about the status of your submission, please contact us at ncfsarticles@gmail.com.

Guidelines for submissions

Articles should not exceed 45,000 characters with spaces, including endnotes and list of Works Cited. Please send your submission as a Word document (not PDF) to ncfsarticles@gmail.com. If the article is accepted, the Editor will request a final and corrected version, again in Word.

Anonymous submission

NCFS subscribes to the policy of anonymous or “blind” submissions. Authors must therefore omit references that would allow them to be identified. They should include a separate document giving the essay’s title along with their name and contact information. The manuscript proper should have the title clearly indicated at the top of the first page, with page numbers running throughout. Articles not retained for publication will be destroyed.

Illustrations

NCFS does, on occasion, publish illustrations or photos. High quality originals are necessary to insure the best possible reproduction in the journal. Authors are responsible for securing both the images and the authorization to reproduce them. The relevant agencies, museums, libraries, or collections should stipulate that permission is being granted for both print and web publication, as Nineteenth-Century French Studies is also published online under the auspices of Project MUSE. Illustrations must be a minimum of 300 dpi. While images appear in black and white in printed issues, authors are invited to submit illustrations in full color, which the journal can accommodate online.

Abstracts

Authors of articles accepted for publication will be required to supply an abstract, which must be in English and no more than 150 words in length.
