Le roman-feuilleton et Alexandre Dumas père (1802-1870)

Although Alexandre Dumas père started his literary career by writing poetry and plays, it is mostly as the author of serial-novels that he is well-known today. Having reached celebrity status in 1829, with the triumph of his first drama Henri III et sa cour, Dumas continued to favor historical topics and lively dialogs in all his later works, even in his serial-novels. The serial-novel was inaugurated in France in 1836 to promote the sale of daily papers. Their directors paid Dumas a fortune to publish his new novels in serialized form, before they were printed as books. He became the king of the serial-novel. (FB)
