On an Episode of Le Rouge et le Noir, `L'Ennui'

A close look at the sixth chapter of Stendhal's novel Le Rouge et le Noir reveals the importance of minor details in the author's narrative technique. The first five chapters prepare for this paramount scene that then functions like the exposition of a classical play. There irony underscores the metamorphosis of Mme de Rênal's character. Unknowingly perhaps, she invites Julien to break the social barrier; the erotic nuances of her seemingly innocent gestures incite Julien to make of M. de Rênal a cuckold husband par excellence. Although Mme de Rênal initiates their relationship, Julien masters the situation step by step in this one, intricate scene. As a final note, the word in "L'Ennui" is relegated to a position of minor importance. There gestures, attitudes and silence are more significant and sincere than the word itself. (JRD)
