French Flower Books of the Early Nineteenth Century

During the first two decades of the nineteenth century, French publishers issued many books about flowers – flower poetry, folklore, and language of flowers – for gentlefolk. These works illustrate an aspect of the culture's understanding of the relationship between man and has landscape. "Charlotte de Latour's" Le Langauge des Fleurs (1819) is the culminating title of this group of books. (BS)
