Monologue ou drame avec Soi: Igitur

An analysis of various formal aspects of Mallarmé's Igitur reveals that it belongs simultaneously to all three genres – drama, narrative, and poetry. Dramatic elements are the monologue and dialogue forms, and the "stage directions." But the use of third person narrative in places, and occasional comments on the action, suggest narrative. Other features, especially the repetitions of words and sounds, draw reader's attention to the language itself, as in poetry. Mallarmé's epigraph for the work implies it is both drama and narrative; and the inclusion of all genres was one of his aims for his projected, but never completed, Book. (In French) (EAH)
