The Present Directions of French Romantic Studies, 1960-1975
There have been many diachronic studies, but too few synchronic ones. Thematic criticism has been the most popular method; periodization, the most widespread issue; and Stendhal, the author most often taught in college courses and the most productive of original work. The major lasting accomplishment of these sixteen years, however, has been the unprecedented production of reliable editions of the authors' works. The bibliographical essay is keyed to a list of 256 selected items published between 1960 and 1975. (LMP)
