The discovery of three unpublished letters between Thédore de Banville and Armand Du Mesnil, together with paintings by Fromentin and Dehodencq, and previously unpublished biographical material, allow a deeper understanding not only of the circle of artists and poets that centred around these figures in their youth, but also of the ways in which those early friendships both leave their mark on works produced at the time and also continue to inform their later work.
